Wincanton Town FC Host Game for Service Charities

Charity Football Game Line UpWho says nothing happens in Wincanton! On the contrary, last Sunday 'loads of money' was raised for the Undentable Trust at a spectacular event held at the Wincanton Sports Ground. The Undentable Trust is an independent charity that helps injured soldiers and their families that have been affected by the military operations in Afghanistan and other conflict zones throughout the world. It achieves this by supporting 3 principle organisations: The Rifles Care for Casualties Fund; The Royal British Legion, and Help for Heroes.

Ex Yeovil and Wincaton team accepting the trophyThe brainchild of Rob Moorse, a Wincanton resident who served with the Devon & Dorsets, and co-hosted by Wincanton Town Football Club, the main event was a charity football match between an Army team and an Ex Yeovil & Wincanton team. It was a wonderfully entertaining game with goals galore, penalties, yellow cards and a referee from the Royal Navy who was able to turn his Nelsonic blind eye to the extraordinary number of substitutions that took place. At the final whistle, it was somehow decided that Yeovil & Wincanton had won in spite of having a couple of ringers playing for them, and they were awarded the trophy by Craig Alcock, captain of Yeovil Town.

Charity book signingAfter the football match, there was a hog roast provided by Andrew Barclay, a raffle and a bouncy castle for the kids. Additionally, having recovered from playing in the big match, Maj Mick Flynn, MC, CGC, whose Army service has taken him from Mount Tumbledown in the Falklands to fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan and all hotspots in between, signed copies of his autobiography 'Bullet Magnet'.

Well done Rob Moorse and Gary Cooper, Chairman of Wincanton Town Football Club, and many thanks to the principle sponsors of the match, Rochford Garden Machinery and Viridor Waste Management.
