Wincanton and District Bowls Club
Bowls Green : - The six-rink bowling green was constructed in 2001 and professionally turfed in September of that year; it conforms to International Standards and is located adjacent to the Maddocks Pavilion, easily accessed from the Sports Ground’s ‘Free’ car park.
Affiliations : - ‘Bowls England’ and ‘Somerset Bowls Association,’ now encompasses men & women under one authority. The Club is also affiliated to the Wessex Friendly League.
History : - Originally started by Laurence Carr in July 1996, then known as Wincanton Bowls Club, with 47 Founder Members in anticipation of a promised new facility. Historically, this follows a Club bearing that same name, which prior to WW 2 was located near the Memorial Hall, adjacent to the new War Memorial, a photo dated 1926 of members (courtesy of Wincanton Museum) is on display in the Maddocks Pavilion. In recognition of his service, the Club awarded Laurie Carr ‘Honorary Life Membership’ at their AGM in 2004. Wincanton & District Bowls Club was formally established on 24 th October 2001. A name change was necessary to avoid confusion with the already established ‘short-mat’ indoor bowls club, which now bears the original title.
Bowls Coaching : - Derek Cooke one of our Past President’s holds a Level 2 Coaching Certificate; his contact details appear under the heading Committee Members. Also see under the heading ‘Potential & Established Members.’

News for Potential & Established Members –
From 7 th April 2010 (weather permitting), club nights will be held on Wednesdays’ after 6 pm, when the Green is open for general practice and coaching. If it’s wet, there is often a social gathering in the pavilion. Why not come along and ‘try-your-hand’ at Bowls, there are no strangers there, just a lot of friends you have not yet met! The club has several sets of bowls and other equipment for you to use. Potential members are entitled to three ‘free’ visits to enable them to decide. Younger people should note that current National Champions in our sport are nearly all under 40; with some under 25 years of age.
All Facilities are available for hire by Teams, Individuals,
Clubs or Commercial Organisations
